Pay Per Click Fraud

According to companies like Click Forensics, who provide online monitoring services, fraudulent click through's to websites could be costing advertisers considerable amounts of cash.

It believes that bogus clicks through to websites from products like the Search Engines On Line Advertising "Pay per Click" has increased to just over 14%.

Pay per Click is where the affililate company or advertisor agrees to pay a search engine like Google, Microsoft or Yahoo a commission for every click through to its own website from a search request by someone looking for products or services via the search engine's own search facility.

These sponsored links or pay per click links usually appear at the top and right of the screen and give the searcher a link to click through to the advertisor's own webstie.

Each time this happens the advertisor pays the search engine a commission hence the terms Pay per Click, which can vary from a few pence per click to many pounds, some can be over £50.00 per click, it depends on the competition the advertisor is bidding against when it arranges the click price with the search engine.

These bogus clicks are costing the advertising affiliate cash every month and it could be one of their competitors clicking through with a bogus click to run up the advertising bill of the advertisor.

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo all use affiliate Pay per Click methods and say that they are devoting resourses to combatting the problem.

There have been concerns on how the search engines who use the Pay per Click system actually establish what is and what isn't a genuine click and they have been criticised for not being open about the way a genuine click is sorted from a fraudulent click.

It is fair to say however, that advertisors can claim back the Click Charge on any clicks they find are fraudulent, and where the search engine itself discovers a fraudulent click it does not charge the advertisor.

Anyone found fraudulently clicking on a Google pay per click link can be delisted by the search engine from the adwords programme and any money in their account is frozen and kept by Google. Having said that it only applies to someone who has an adword account.

The moral to the story is - If you use Pay per Click make sure you monitor it!
