What is Foot and Mouth Disease? |
FMD is a highly infectious viral infection that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as sheep, cattle, pigs, goats and deer. There are several strains of FMD that can only be differentiated in the laboratory. How is the disease controlled? The basic control policy is the slaughter of all susceptible animals on premises infected with FMD and dangerous contacts. Movement restrictions are also put in place to help contain the disease. Currently there is a ban on all livestock movements throughout the U.K. and around the immediate infected sites a 3km radius Protection Zone and a wider 10km Surveillance Zone. Is there anything different now compared to the last outbreak in 2001?At no point during the 2001 outbreak of foot and mouth was there a national ban on the movement of stock, so this is a new situation for all. A ban on the export of any meat or dairy products will last until three months after the last case of foot and mouth is declared. Financial Help AvailableThe ban on livestock movements will have severe financial repercussions for many people in the rural economy. Our thanks to the Churches Together in Cumbria Team for this information. |
Poultry Farming in Cumbria |
The outbreak if confirmed in Scotland of the H5N1 strain of Avian Flu, commonly called Bird Flu will have an immediate impact of those who keep poultry either for domestic use or for commercial reasons. |
Hobby farmers could pose bird flu risk |
The government's chief vet Debby Reynolds reckons that there are at least 250,000 smaller scale poultry owners in the country and she has literally no idea how many people keep chickens in the UK, which could cause problems in a bird flu outbreak. She also said that the authorities would be reliant on the media to relay advice and information to these hobby farmers. |

Farm Diversification |
| Many farms across the UK need to diversify, but much of the money spent so far has been on only a mild form of deversification from the main agricultural income. Is this enough to save farming? Farm size and land suitability often plays a part in the viability of the business, (for example you can't plough rock) but are we doing enough to really diversify these businesses and allow the families who live on small farms to continue with their lifestyles? Often when a farm is a tenancy, the landlord might stipulate that a minimum of 80% of the income for that business MUST come from Agriculture. In this day and age this is a killer for many small farms who need to be able to look to other ways of generating income in order to survive and make a decent living. What should we be doing?
