The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (WEEE) came into force on 2 January. The Regulation aims to reduce the quantity of waste from electrical and electronic equipment and to increase its re-use, recovery and recycling. The WEEE Regulation affects producers, distributors and recyclers of electrical and electronic equipment - which includes - household appliances,
- IT and telecoms equipment,
- audiovisual equipment (TV, video, hi-fi),
- lighting, electrical and electronic tools,
- toys, leisure and sports equipment.
Discounts for Members of Federation of Small BusinessesFSB members who are retailers in electrical and electronic equipment can simply and cheaply fulfil their obligations by registering with the Valpak Distributor Takeback Scheme (DTS).
Valpak is the only Government approved scheme for retailers. The discounted rate for FSB member is £175 + VAT. The fee is a one off payment and covers compliance for a three year period.

Motorists face tough new penalties for breaking the law by using a hand-held mobile phone while driving from February 27 2007, from that date, the fixed penalty will for the first time include the award of three penalty points as well as doubling the fine to £60. From 1 June 2007 anyone buying a home will get a certificate giving clear advice on its energy efficiency and running costs for the first time. The certificate will also give an energy efficiency rating and advice on further improvements that can be made. All properties will have a certificate when they are constructed, sold or let by 2009. 20th February 07 - Waste Awareness Training |
Measures to help individuals tackle climate change and adopt greener lifestyles have been unveiled by the Government. The announcement includes the launch of a comprehensive on-line guide to greener living on Directgov. A carbon calculator to help people find out how much carbon they emit annually from their actions is also being developed.
The online guide to greener living is designed to help people who want to find out what they can do in their everyday lives to tackle climate change and other environmental issues. The guide includes actions that can be taken covering the home, shopping, travel, food and drink, waste and recycling, energy and water saving, gardening, as well as being green in your workplace, school and community.

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management have developed a Waste Awareness Certificate aimed specifically at employees who deal with waste in all kinds of situations on a daily basis. It covers some basic facts about the law on wastes and how employees and companies can avoid running foul of the regulators, and how companies and individuals can reduce the amount of wastes they generate, deal more effectively with the wastes that they produce, and save money in the process!
