Internet marketing
Many business owners understand how to promote their businesses and their products by traditional methods such as advertising and editorials in Newspapers and magazines, use of brochures and leaflets or perhaps by use of television or radio advertising. When it comes to the Internet, there is a tendency to treat the website in much the same way as a brochure, catalogue or leaflet. The fact is that the Internet is a completely different animal to the other forms of marketing methods mentioned above and because to that a website requires a different approach to these more traditional approaches.
Promoting your business on the Internet
It is necessary that you should realise how the user of more traditional promotional materials regard the material that they receive.
Brochures and leaflets are read fairly thoroughly, providing the content interests the reader; similarly, an individual whose interest is caught by the wording and images in catalogues and adverts take care to read most if not all of the content.
Internet Users on the other hand tend to scan pages
People visiting you web pages have a tendency to scan the page for items of interest to them and have probably been taken to your page after visiting an Internet Search Engine or Web Directory, so how did they get to your pages?
The Power of the Internet
The Internet has become the first port of call for so many people now when they want to find something. That something could be a product or service, it might be information about an illness or treatment or perhaps they want to find somewhere to stay on a coming business trip or holiday. It is so easy now to find things out about places to which you have never been, products you want to buy or information you need about any manner of things.
At the time of writing Google is the main source of search requests in the UK with over 50% of search enquiries being directed to them at www.google.com or www.google.co.uk Other key suppliers of this information are Yahoo, Ask and Alta Vista, there are others but those mentioned here tend to carry the vast majority of search requests.
When looking for a product or service the user will put into a search box certain words or phrases for example "hotels in Berlin". The search engine will then come up with a list of anywhere between one and six million (or more) web addresses which link to websites that exactly, reasonably or vaguely match in some way the search request. Having scanned the alternatives provided the user clicks on one of these links to be taken to the appropriate website.
So, that is probably how most visitors find your website. This provides us with useful information and opportunities for we can arrange our web pages to entice visitors and keep them coming back.
In the first instance, it tells us that we should be making our page content easy for Internet Search Engines to find and index. In the second instance, that not only do we have to keep the potential customer happy, we also have to understand and deliver on our pages aspects of design and content which make life easier for search engine and by doing so, the customer.
In delivering both of these aspects we can do all we can to make sure that our pages are found by those who want our goods or services.
Website Invisibility
Not doing the right thing or doing the wrong thing really can mean that potential customers will be unable to find your website if they don't know you webstie address or URL.
This is why they use search engines, it is impossible to know all the web addresses of all the websites covering your need. The search engines can however index them and do.
