Sunset in the Leven Valley

Autumn is upon us and we thought you might like a reminder of the excellent summer evenings that we have had this year with this photo of a sunset in Leven Valley by Mike Morton.

Let's hope the winter will be as kind to us as the summer has been.

Dear Colleagues,

We have been that busy sorting out numerous enhancements to the already powerful software behind the Cumbria Business Portal and Your websites that we have been missing our newsletters and just as we were ready to start writing one another enhancement became available and ready to run.

Never enough time eh? The eternal cry of the small business.

For the most part we have had some wonderful weather, however, it now appears to be more like normal. We hope that you are all keeping well and thriving.

The Summer Newsletter is all about Marketing - how you can get your website well promoted and drive visitors to your site to see what you have to offer and hopefully when there - to buy from you.

Success Stories

Success story from Coniston Consultants

Three years on from starting his own business (Coniston Consultants) Ken Thompson has had a number of successes having won projects from West Cumbria Development Agency (WCDA), and Allerdale Borough Council. His projects won range from Carlisle in the north to Kirkby Thore in the east, Haweswater and Ulswater and down to Beckermet on the west coast.

Well done Ken.

You can visit Ken's web site at Coniston Consultants

If you have any success stories let us know about them and we will publish them on the Portal. No charge as long as you send us copy by email so we can simply copy and paste plus any photo's in Jpeg. If you send photo's and hard copy text we may have to make a small charge for re-typing it and scanning images prior to loading up.

There is a members discount of 50% on the prices quoted for Quarter, Half and Full page adverts.

Internet Marketing - The Key factors

Promoting your business on the Internet

If you want a good return form your website then you MUST promote it; this means making sure people can find your website and of course in marketing your goods and services you want customers to come back again and again. Whilst the key to this is always Good Content.

Good content does not just mean pretty images or animations but well written text that really means something to your visitor and links to the products and services that you want to sell. Remember many search engines cannot see images, they are a black hole to them. So don't fall into the trap of numerous images on pages. Where the Internet is concerned the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words" is only true if it is accompanied by those words!!!

Search Engine Rankings

Artemis on Page 1 Google for "Web Design Cumbria"

If you have a website you will no doubt have been called by a certain company or companies about how they can guarantee to get you in first place on page 1 of Google for £250.00 or something like that.

Firstly - Only Google can guarantee you first place on any page and Secondly, they are not likely to do that unless you are willing to pay them handsomely for it are they? Thirdly - you don't have to be number one on Google to have a website that sells and sells well!

It could well be worth you paying for listing in directories so don't dismiss it. Make sure you are lisitng your website in the right directory. Its no use listing an ironmongers site in a directory for knitting for example. So look carefully at the client base they serve before commiting yourself.

Optimising Web Pages & Link Building

Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Saturation Report (marketleap)

When optimising your website for search engines certain aspects of text and image configuration must be taken into consideration and the site content should then be built around this strategy.

These include Key words and phrases which relate to your pages and products, the heading and content of the page. The search engines will rank your pages on the content of the page and the connectivity between your content and your key words and phrases.

Remember, whenever you make a change to the content of your website our unique software recognises that and sends an email to the Google search engine to tell it that changes have been made and on what page they have been made.

This saves you time and is favoured by Google. It helps you to keep your site promoted because each time our software tells Google you have made a change it will send its search robot to view that page. Everyone else will have to wait for the monthly crawl by the robot, and sometimes it may not visit sites it deems less important for a number of weeks perhaps months.

Search Engines

Optimising a site well for search engine friendliness is quite a skilled series of tasks and what the average business owner must decide is whether their time should be better spent selling thier goods and services or learning how to be a web developer. To learn all the in's and out's of search engine optimisation can take some time and that time could be better spent on running your business effectively.

That is why we provide a one off or continuous optimisation package. We can assess your website and agree a marketing package on a monthly basis which will help promote your website and drive visitors to you.

  • Search Engine Services include

  • Research keywords and phrases to select appropriate, relevant search terms

  • Agree with you the Number of keywords to be optimised and what pages should be optimised. Additional keyword purchases will require Addendum or separate contract.

  • Edit various html tags and page text as necessary prior to submission to selected search engines and directories.

  • Create as required, additional web pages for the purpose of "catching" keyword/phrase searches.

  • Hand-submit your pages to the search engines and directories agreed

  • Create positioning reports for main site and any associated pages showing rankings in the major search engines and under which keywords.

Building In-Bound Links to your website

Link Report (marketleap)

Cumbria Business Portal has over 16,000 inbound links to its website.

The way the search engines value a site and its content is in

  • how the site is laid out,
  • its navigability and
  • the number of links that come to and
  • the number of links that go from the website.

Search engines prize inbound links to the site over two way links or reciprocal links and to drive traffic you must generate enough inbound links to provide "value" and to inform all and sundry that your site is an important site and worth a visit. However, any old link won't do, it has to be an "appropriate link".

Unless you want to pay hundreds of pounds for Google adwords then link building is critical and should be undertaken by someone who understands the process and the value that is being added by selecting appropriate links. (inappropriate links work against you)

This way your rankings on search engine pages rises as your links gain you "points". Skilled link builders are worth their weight in gold!

You have two choices when it comes to marketing your website, you take the DIY option and learn how to become an Internet marketeer over a period of time, perhaps letting your business turnover and production suffer, or you can build your business and get someone skilled at internet marketing to do the job for you.

Good link building is a skilled and focussed activity. Naturally for a quality service from skilled individuals in simple cash terms they are not what some might call cheap. Having said that, Link Building and Search Engine Optimisation between them drive traffic and web recognition, so it is probably easier to come at this from the other perspective -

How much is a non-performing website costing you?

Our Link Building Service

First we research the links you need to have built and a strategy for the link building

Over a six month period, we will build an agreed number of Inbound links using tools like syndicated articles, syndicated press releases and directory listings.

These links will drive targeted traffic and help your Web site achieve higher rankings for the competitive keywords and key phrases we have recommended/agreed with you.

Once we have built the agreed number of links we will provide you with a report on the links that have been built.

Articles and Newsletters

Writing articles about products that you sell and creating newsletters is a fantastic way of bringing interest and good content to your website. Articles can also be syndicated which means that links can be created to your website for other sites which point to your article or newsletter.

Again you might not feel that you have the skills to write an article or produce a newsletters, so here we can help you again - We can write them for you.

We will need basic information from you so that we can then write up the article for you or produce a newsletter.

Both can then be syndicated with other websites or even printed in hard copy for clients and prospective clients. They can be emailed to your client base from your websites mailing lists and are a great way of promoting your seasonal products or services.

Remember - Christmas is coming and you should now be planning your Christmas edition of your website.

Christmas is coming

Father Christmas
Ideally you should have started getting your material and product information for Christmas ready in August for the website.

Start marketing it from this month on so that the search engines can pick up Special Offers etc and get those gift articles written so that you can create interest in the product or service. Remember you can go to the page settings and hide your Christmas page until you want the customers to see it. The search engines will still be able to view it but not your customers. You can then make it live as soon as you are ready by changing the "Hide" to "Show".

Don't leave it too late!!!!

Finally

Loraine and I were thinking about holding a training session at Kendal College in their computer suite some time in October to go over some of the new software enhancements and to show you some tips and ideas for marketing and improving the look of your website.

Cost would be around £20.00 per person as we have to pay for the room and access to the computers in the suite.

Could you let us know if you would like to take advantage of this please and we can come back with possible dates for the seminar which would probably be 3 to 4 hours, say from 10:30 to 2:30 pm. (Buffet Lunch inlcuded)

Evry thing you see here in this news letter has been created using the Content Management System and photoshop where images are concerned. So you can do it too! If you don't have the time talk to us to see how we can help.

Best wishes to you all and may you have a very busy autimn and Christmas. We will try to get another newsletter out with some hints and tips before Christmas hits us .

Loraine and David.
