Businesses using the Internet to sell goods or services could face major problems if new EU Law is passed.

Planned EU law on contracts will hit sales on the Internet and impose some serious costs on many small and large companies if it is passed in the next few weeks.

The Regulation, which has been proposed, will mean that companies that sell across borders will have to deal with customer complaints under the 27 different member states legal systems. The British Retail Consortium and the CBI have warned the EU Industry Commissioner Mr Gunter Verheugen that the cost burden could stop businesses from trading in EU Markets. There has been massive criticism of the European Commission for ploughing ahead with this legislation without properly thinking the proposal through or consulting businesses. Clearly its impact has not been assessed.
The cost implications for small businesses in particular could far outweigh any benefit to doing business in the EU. Firms would have to undertake stringent checks on potential customers or risk losing large amounts of cash and goods. Can you imagine having to fight a case in Slovenia, Latvia, Greece or Estonia, the costs would be astronomical.

We suggest that you contact your MEP and express your concerns .
