Truncate Page Title Length

There is now an option in Site admin settings (under Naming and appearance) where you can specify the number of characters for a page title (default 64). This is for a title that appears in your browser window title and is also used by search engines to list pages.

This is to comply with the W3C's 'ideal' number of characters for a title (80 characters). However, it also seems that there may be added benefits as some search engines truncate web site titles at 64 characters. So if relevant keywords aren't in the first 64 characters of a PAGETITLE they MAY be ignored.

Cumbria Business Portal's Site Editor page titles are made up in HTML in the following format <title>SITENAME - PAGETITLE</title>.

If the combination of SITENAME and PAGETITLE add up to more than your specified number the following steps will be taken:

   1. The SITENAME will be removed from the title.

   2. If the title is still too long then the PAGETITLE will be truncated and only the first number of characters (the number you specify) will be shown.
