Constituents: Essential oil containing carotenoids (carotene/calenduline lycopene), saponin, resin, bitter principle, flavenoids, mucilage, sterols, nitrogen, phosphoric acid, Vitamin A
Keynote: Injuries; after surgery
Immune stimulant, anti-protazoal, antispasmodic, anti-haemorrhage, anti-histamine, antibacterial effect particularly against staphylococcus and streptococcus, anti-emetic, anti-cancer, anthelmintic, oestrogenic activity (extract from fresh flowers), menstrual regulator (Thomas Bartram)
Actions: Vulnery, emmenagogue, diaphoretic, alterative, astringent (non-tannin), antiseptic, styptic, cholagogue, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal
Systems affected: Liver, heart and lungs
Used for: Useful in all inflammations of the digestive tract, gastric and duodenal ulcers, good stimulant to the gallbladder. Helps to normalise menstruation and assists in amenorrhoea and dysmenorrhoea (International Register of Consultant Herbalists)
