Crataegus Monogyna

Whitethorn, Mayflower, Bread and Cheese

Family: Rosaceae
 
Part used: Berries, leaves, flowers
 
Constituents: Flavenoid glycosides (including rutin and quercitin), saponins, cyanogenic glycosides, tannins
 
Actions: Coronary and peripheral vasodilator, also having a bradycardic effect on the myocardium, it appears to exert a tonifying action on the tissues of the vasculature. Hypotensive (Simon Mills A-Z). Positive heart restorative, antispasmodic, adaptogen, sedative to nervous system, cholesterol and mineral solvent. Lacks toxic effects of digitalis. Increases blood flow through the heart, strengthens heart muscle without increasing the beat or raising blood pressure. Enhances exercise duration (Thomas Bartram)
 
Cardiac tonic, normalises - relaxing or stimulating the heart according to need, reducing any oppression. Strengthens the force of heart muscle contraction at the same time dilating coronary blood vessels. Dissolves fatty deposits in thickened arteries. Astringent action on mucus membranes (International Register of Consultant Herbalists)

Used for: Heart conditions: twin, almost paradoxical effects on the heart, dilating of coronary blood supply and tendency to slow down and stabilise the contractility of the heart muscle means that it finds many applications to heart disturbances. Also applicable to peripheral circulatory conditions such as intermittent claudication and atherosclerosis (A-Z)
 
Cardiac failure, or early myocardial weakness, hypertension, arterio-scleriosis, Buergers disease, paroxysmal tachycardia (British Herbal Pharmacopoeia)
