Inula - Elecampane

Elecampane

Elecampane, Scabwort

Family: Compositae

Part used: Root, rhizome

Constituents: Essential oil, bitter principles, resin, inulin mucilage

Actions: Stimulating expectorant, diaphoretic, digestive tonic, relaxing, warming, bacteriostatic, alterative, carminative, astringent

Systems affected: Lungs, spleen, stomach

Used for: Respiratory complaints, chronic coughs, digestive weakness. Most used in complaints of the respiratory and digestive tracts

Inula is particularly good for chronic, old conditions especially if associated with excessive catarrhal expectoration, such as bronchial catarrh and congestive bronchial and pulmonary states – increases productivity. The mucilage has a relaxing effect accompanied by the stimulation of the essential oils. In this way expectoration is accompanied by a soothing action combined with an anti-bacterial effect

European herbalists would probably call this the No 1 lung tonic. It's warming for a cold wet cough. Doesn't suppress the cough

Given for asthma and bronchitis – beneficial on a long term basis

Inula has an affinity for the tubercular diathesis
