Urtica Dioica

Nettle

Family: Urticaceae
 
Part used: Whole plant
 
Energy and Flavours: Bland, slightly bitter, cool
 
Constituents: High amounts of chlorophyll, histamine, iron, vitamin C, tannin, fibre, alkaloid, vitamin A, silicon, potassium, protein and fibre, serotonin, acetyl-choline, calcium, formic acid
 
Actions: Diuretic, astringent, blood tonic, haemostatic, galactagogue, expectorant, nutritive, hypoglycaemic, depurative, vasodilatory, antiseptic, hypotensive, splenic, circulatory stimulant, amphoteric (normaliser) - breast milk. Remineraliser, antirheumatic, strengthens natural resistance, eliminates uric acid from the body
 
Systems affected: Small intestines, bladder, lungs
 
Used for: British Herbal Pharmacopoeia Uterine haemorrhage. Cutaneous eruptions, infantile and psychogenic eczema, epistaxis, melaena
 
BHP Spec: nervous eczema
 
Iron deficiency anaemia, gout (acute painful joints - partial amelioration), first stage of fevers (repeat frequently), malaria, inflammation of uvula, foul smelling sores, to stimulate kidneys, detoxifies the blood, nettle and raspberry leaf for calcium and iron in pregnancy. To withstand onset of uraemia in kidney disease, chronic skin disease, malaena (blood in stool), splenic disorders, high blood sugar in diabetes, feeble digestion due to low levels of HCL, bleeding of stomach, bowels, lungs and uterus. Has power to eliminate urates: expulsion of gravel. On taking nettle tea for high blood pressure passage of gravel is possible and should be regarded as a favourable sign. For women desiring an ample bust. Lobster and shell fish allergy, strawberry allergy. Nettle rash. Hair - fall out - teas used as a rinse. Frequent drinks of nettle tea often allay itching of Hodgekins disease (Thomas Bartram)
