Constituents: iridoids, aucubin, flavenoids, mucilage, tannins
 
Actions: diuretic, alterative, anti-inflammatory, aperient, anti-histamine, antibacterial, anti-allergy, blood tonic, lymphatic, demulcant, expectorant, astringent
 
Systems affected: bladder, small intestine, gallbladder
 
One of the most versatile of herbs. Rich source of minerals potassium, magnesium phosphorus. All body tissue feels its influence
 
Used for: Both plantains have valuable healing properties. It is a gentle expectorant whole soothing inflamed and sore membranes making it ideal for coughs and mild bronchitis. Its astringency aids in diarrhoea, haemorrhoids and cystitis where there is bleeding (David Hoffman)
 
Plantain is useful for urinary tract infections; the aucubin helps the secretion of uric acid from the kidneys. The apigenin and baicalein are anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic. Good internally for all inflammations including hepatitis and bacillary dysentery. Leaves applied externally to antidote bites and stings. Astringency stops bleeding and promotes healing of wounds and injuries (Michael Tierra)
 
Chronic blood disorders. A neuralgic remedy of the first order. Fluid extract or tincture painted on shingles etc (Thomas Bartram)
 
Intermittent fever, kidney and bladder disorders, bedwetting, irritable bowel, dysentery, bleeding piles, diverticulitis (enema). Ulcers internal and external
 
Bleeding malignant ulcers; infusion to cleanse before dressing with plantain salve
 
Excess menstrual loss, hyperacidity, bronchitis, bruises, chronic discharging skin eruptions, scalds, burns, wounds that refuse to heal. Cystitis with blood, thrush or purulent discharge (strong tea as vaginal douche). Skin disorders, eczema and acne (Thomas Bartram)
