Friday 18th May is National Home Working Day! National Home Working day is part of Work Wise Week. It is estimated that around 11% of the total workforce which is equivalent to 3 Million out of a UK work force of 28.7 million are now Home Workers. A home worker is someone who actually works from home or from somewhere different to their parent company's office.
It is expected that this number could grow significantly with forecasts of perhaps 50% of the workforce working from home in the next 5 years.
Flexible working is being promoted as a means of improving working conditions, reducing commuting and utilising peoples flexible hours so that they can communicate world wide via the Internet. The main resistance to home working from employers appears to be based on the fact that if the employee is at home he or she cannot be working properly when the evidence is the reverse of this illusion.
Home workers have been "clocked" and monitored with surprising results. Home workers have statistically been proved to be more productive than their counterparts back at the office.
The practice has become known as Smart Working.
By allowing workers to have flexible hours built around their families etc., productivity has risen and the home workers are less stressed, more happy and more conscientious than the doubters would have believed.
Broadband, Interactive websites and email have all made this possible and it could be a cost saver to many businesses.
